New York City: NYC Marathon

The NYC Marathon happens on Sunday, November 7, 2010. In September, the NYC Marathon celebrated its 40th birthday. Runners from around the world come to New York to participate in the annual NYC Marathon.
The ING New York City Marathon attracts over 100,000 applicants every year. One of the greatest road races in the world, the NYC Marathon attracts everyday people, celebrities and world class athletes to cross the finish line in Central Park and compete for $600,000 in prize money.
With over 700,000 past participants, the NYC Marathon is a popular event. Over two million spectators arrive to cheer for the NYC Marathon runners with 315 million television viewers around the globe.
Fred Lebow, founder of the New York Road Runners and NYC City Marathon, change the face of marathons forever. Formally modest events run by a few athletes with sparse attendance, the NYC Marathon brought attention to the sport. Today fans from all around the world look forward to the NYC Marathon.
New York Road Runners promotes the sport of distance running. Their mission is to enhance health and fitness for everyone while responding to the needs of the community. The organization’s road races and fitness program draw over 300,000 runners each year.
Beyond the NYC Marathon, the New York Road Runners Youth Programs offers running programs to promote physical fitness, personal achievement and character development in children living in under-served communities. Over 50,000 children take advantage of NYRR programs in nearly 250 community centers and schools.
