Steve Young came in at No. 81 on the network's top-100 list and Ronnie Lott just missed appearing in tonight's series finale, checking in at No. 11. Mike Singletary, by the way, was listed at No. 57.
Other players who at least had a pit stop in San Francisco include Larry Allen (No. 95), O.J. Simpson (No. 40) and Deion Sanders (No. 34).
So far, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice haven't appeared. I'm guessing they're top-10 material. Just a hunch.
The network's list was compiled by current and former NFL coaches, players and front-office personnel, media members, Hall of Fame voters and league historians.
They did a good job of including old-timers on the list -- there is a natural tendency to favor modern-day players since, really, who actually saw Sammy Baugh sling it?
Like most sports geeks, I love these subjective lists and the endless arguments they inspire -- Steve Van Buren over Tony Dorsett? Mel Hein, huh? -- and I also love these NFL Network productions.
Its America's Game series, one-hour documentaries on each Super Bowl champion, is brilliant. Even my wife enjoys watching them and she still doesn't know what constitutes a first down.
Hulu.com has the first 42 America's Games. Click here for nearly two days of unproductivity, um, I mean, enjoyment.
