Why What's Up

Since joining the Patriots [team stats], Wes Welker has been one of the most prolific receivers in the NFL. Last year, he tied an NFL record with seven 10-plus reception games. His 123 receptions last year matched Herman Moore for the second-most receptions in a single season in NFL history behind Marvin Harrison’s 143.

After eight games this year, Welker is far off his typical 100-reception pace. He’s not even on course to reach 90, as he has pulled in just 44 catches thus far. Another important statistic of note when it comes to Welker, his yards after catch (YAC yards), also aren’t on par with years past, where he was up among the league leaders.

So what’s wrong with No. 83?

Returning to the field within the first year from major reconstructive left knee surgery could provide one answer. Playing without Randy Moss the past four games could be another for his drop off, with defenses now able to pay more attention to him.

With that in mind, here are some Welker statistics to ponder:

YAC (yards after catch) statistics

2007: 640 (2nd in NFL)

2008: 758 (1st in NFL)

2009: 733 (2nd in NFL)

2010: 186 (currently 30th in NFL).

Rec/Yds/Avg (After 8 games)

2007: 56/613/10.2

2008: 56/561/9.0

2009: 79/854/10.6

2010: 44/355/8.1
